I will not make it by myself
No matter how I run the race
I'll likely faint before I reach the end
And fall upon my face
I've ever longed that I could be
Someone swifter, with more strength
To be the first to cross the line
On my own power the whole length
I look at men who've run their race
I admire them from afar
What's wrong with me and my weak legs?
Will I ever get to where they are?
I've stumbled several times along the way
I was bruised and felt the shame.
But someone helped me back up to my feet
And I got back in the game.
And now as I come to think of it
I've seen others stumble now and then.
I always stopped to help them up
And they rose to run again.
Even now as I look way up ahead
At the runners in the lead,
They're not much different than me you know
They have their times of need.
Maybe there's no shame in falling short
If I try to run the best I can.
If I require assistance now and then
Would I be less a man?
I now believe that I was right
I cannot make it on my own
And I realize now with enlightened eyes
That no one wins the race alone.
I'll cheer for those who run up front,
I'll encourage those far behind,
I will love the ones that buoy me up
And together we'll cross the line.
